THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO ALL THINGS METAL

BY METALLICA100 (LUKE)
IPB Image
Map isn't great but it's not important lol.

Since there is always heated debates and discussions about the origins of metal and people wanting to discover new bands and the like, I have decided to make a guide and map (seeing as that's what I'll be doing for a living) of where different metal bands have originated from. Some bands mentioned aren't exactly to my liking, I've heard most of them but I also did a bit of research. Hopefully you can learn more about metal bands and discover more bands by likeness in taste and genre.

(Famous songs and best album is just my rough guide and opinion, it's purely to help people get into the particular band. I don't want heated discussions about the best Metallica album)

A bit about me : Why am I a good metal judge and worthy to make a guide? I've been listening to metal since I was 15, before I discovered metal I just didn't listen to music because I liked very little I heard. I am metal at heart and metal for life. I've been playing guitar for 5 years and taught myself and only played metal, I understand a lot about the music. I pride myself on listening to as much metal as I can, it's like a drug to me. I've also got an A/S level in music technology so I understand production, song structure and many musical techniques metal bands use. I constantly read music and tabs by metal bands and their lyrics. I've been to many gigs and festivals, metal is what I am and what I love to do. You don't have to take notice of my judgement it is merely my educated opinion. I like most metal so there's really no problem. Onwards with the guide!

If I've seen the band live, I'll give them a rating out of 10 for the best time I've seen them.

Lets start from the beginning then where all good things start, in the UK.

UK

Coloured bright green on the map is where heavy metal was born. Mixing elements of blues, early pop and classical the original heavy metal bands were formed toward the end of the 1960's. Of course metal took influence from punk but I can't go into that because I don't know much about it and it's meant to be a Metal guide.

EARLY/ORIGINAL HEAVY METAL

Name : Black Sabbath
Genre : Heavy metal
Famous songs : Black Sabbath, Paranoid, War Pigs, Iron Man, Hole in the sky, Sweet leaf, Snowblind, Sabbath bloody sabbath, Sabbra Cadabra, Symptom of the Universe, Heaven and hell

Judgement : I don't know much Deep Purple but I know they are an important band to the emergence of rock/metal. Not really my style but it's rockin'.

NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL

Now we've looked at where it all started, we see it progress with the 'new wave of British heavy metal' which comes a step closer to metal as it is nowadays.

Name : Iron Maiden
Genre : Heavy/power metal
Famous songs : Run to the hills, number of the beast, The evil that men do, Can I play with madness, Aces high, Iron Maiden, The trooper, fear of the dark, Hallowed be thy name, Powerslave
Best album : Number of the best
Judgement : I didn't quite 'get' Maiden at first but then I got really into them. Their music is very well thought out and structured. One of the first metal bands to bring that faster/distorted element to all their songs. Mixing in amazing musicianship and killer vocals. Maiden is definately a must listen to band for any metal fan plus their live shows are fantastic.
Live rating : 10/10
Website : Iron Maiden

Name : Judas Priest
Genre : Heavy Metal
Famous songs : Breaking the law, Living after midnight, Painkiller, Electric eye, Metal meltdown, Freewheel burning
Best album : British Steel (apprantely)
Judgement : I'm not too keen on Priest, I need to listen to a bit more myself to give proper judgement. If you really dig power metal vocals then definately get some Judas Priest. Check out British Steel ThumbUp.gif.
Website : Judas Priest

Name : Motorhead
Genre : Heavy metal/rock/speed/punk
Famous songs : Aces of spades, Overkill, Bomber, Damage case, Dead men tell no tales, Killed by death, white line fever, Iron fist, Too late, too late, We are the roadcrew
Best album : Bomber, Ace of spades

Live rating : 6/10
Website : Motorhead

Name : Diamond Head
Genre : Heavy metal/rock
Famous songs : Lightning to the nations, The prince, Am I evil?, Helpless, It's electric, Shoot out the lights
Best album : Lightning to the nations
Judgement : Diamond head were a major influence to bands like Metallica, I've seen them live supporting Megadeth and they were really ownage. They've made a recent return to the scene and is a must for fans of the genre.
Live rating : 6/10
Website : Diamond Head

Other mentionable bands from the NWOBHM

Name : Venom
Genre : Heavy/thrash metal/black
Judgement : Massively influencial band for all genres of metal. I'm not a big fan but they're a very important band.
Website : Venom

Name: Dio
Genre : Heavy metal
Best album : Holy Diver
Judgement : Ex vocalist of Black sabbath who went on to do solo work which become very popular, not technically NWOBHM but he was as part of Sabbath.
Live rating : 6/10
Website : Dio

Name: Saxon
Genre : Heavy/power metal
Judgement : Saw them live at a festival, didn't like them much but they are a huge heavy metal act.
Live rating : 3/10
Website : Saxon

Name : Blitzkrieg
Genre : Heavy metal

BRITISH DEATH METAL

Name : Napalm Death
Genre : Death metal/Grindcore
Famous songs : Nazi punks fuck off, Scum, You suffer
Judgement : Personally I'm not huge on Napalam death as I haven't heard a lot of their work. I hear their live shows are completely crazy so if you're into grindcore/death metal then you might really be into Napalm Death. Carcass were formed from ex Napalm death members. Napalm Death are extremely important to extreme metal and widely respected.
Website : Napalm Death

Name : Carcass
Genre : Death/melodic/thrash/grindcore
Famous songs : Genital grinder, Pyosisified, Reek of Putrefaction, Inpropagation, Corporeal Jigsore Quandary, Buried dreams, Carnal forge, Heartwork, Embodiment, This mortal coil, Keep on rotting in the free world, Tomorrow belongs to nobody, Black star, Generation hexed
Best album : Heartwork
Judgement : Carcass worked their way through the extreme metal genres, starting off as a grindcore band they progressed to death metal then melodic death metal and finally heavy metal/thrash. I think the 'heartwork' album is one of the finest metal albums ever written. I'm pleased to announce that prior to their breakup about 15years ago, Carcass are reforming to do some live shows and who knows what else. If you like death metal and haven't got some carcass then you must! Carcass reign!

Name : Cancer
Genre : Death metal
Judgement : I haven't heard alot of Cancer but I know their early stuff is good but it's hard to get hold of unfortunately. Their latest album before splitting up 'Spirit in flames' is a well produced and original death metal album and metal fans
should endevour to hear it.

Name : Bolt thrower
Genre : Death metal
Judgement : I've only just started listening to Bolt thrower and there's a lot of material to get through. Their latest release 'those once loyal' I found really easy to get into, a real groove death metal classic. Another massive death metal band you might not of heard of.
Website : Bolt Thrower

OTHER BRITISH METAL

Name : Dragonforce
Genre : Extreme power metal
Famous songs : Valley of the damned, Black fire, Disciples of babylon, My spirit will go on, Fury of the storm, Fields of despair, Prepare for war, Through the fire and flames, Revoltion deathsquad, Operation ground and pound, Body breakdown
Best album : Sonic Firestorm
Judgement : I've seen Dragonforce a few times and they truely are amazing at their own shows. The keyboardist has a keyboard guitar! It's crazy how popular they have got in such a short time. I hope it doesn't affect their music too much. I was a big fan of 'Sonic firestorm' but 'Inhuman rampage' was a bit of a let down in comparison. People who don't even like metal, like dragonforce so there's no excuses not to give them a spin.
Live rating : 9/10
Website : Dragonforce

Name : Stampin' Ground
Genre : Hardcore/Metalcore/Thrash
Famous songs : Officer down, The Symmetry Of Hatred, Bathe My Wounds, Everyone owes a death, By Whatever Means Necessary, Don€™t Need A Reason To Hate, Behind The Light, Dead from the neck up, Bear the scars, Pain is weakness (leaving the body)
Judgement : I can't recommend Stampin' ground enough, probably unheard of outside the UK but this is what this guide is about, for people to hear about metal they may not hear about anywhere else. I've been to so many Stampin' ground shows, they always had the sickest pits and wall of deaths. They absolutely destroyed the London Astoria when I saw them supporting Sepultura. They started off as a Hardcore punk/metal band sounding similar to Hatebreed but I really like their last two albums which are more metalcore. Despite being split up they go down as one of the most brutal Uk metal acts.
Live rating : 10/10
Website : Stampin' Ground

Name : Raging Speedhorn
Genre : Sludgecore/Grindcore/Heavy metal
Famous songs : Superscud, Redweed, Knives and faces, Mandan, Thumper, High whore, The gush, The hate song, Scrapin' the resin, Chronic youth, Iron cobra, Fuck the vodooman, A different shade of shit, Dead man walking
Judgement : I used to be a big fan back in the day, their pits were fun as fuck and the music catchy as hell. If you like fast brutal riffs with screaming vocals then check out Speedhorn. It's probably a lot different from what you'll expect but I'm sure you'll like it.
Live rating : 8/10
Website : Raging Speedhorn

Name : Cradle of filth
Genre : Gothic/heavy/black metal
Judgement : I don't like COF but of course they are massive so worth a mention.
Website : Cradle of filth

Name : Akercocke
Genre : Death/black metal
Judgement : Saw them a few times when they toured a lot. I find them quite difficult to get into but they are a big extreme metal act here in the UK. I'm gonna have to listen to them some more but I hear 'The goat of medes' album is good.
Live rating : 5/10
Website : Ackercocke

Name : Bullet for my valentine
Genre : Metalcore
Judgement : They show signs of good metal but I don't like the melodic vocals and the emo lyrics. Maybe they will come out with something heavier but I wouldn't count on it. Saying this if you wanna get into metal then this band might be a good link.
Website : Bullet for my valentine

Famous songs : Whiskey in the jar, Boys are back in town, Jailbreak, Cowboy song, The rocker

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

IPB Image

Let's start where metal began in the USA, mainly California, coloured red on the map.

BAY AREA THRASH METAL

Name : Metallica
Genre : Thrash metal/hard rock
Famous songs : The four horsemen, Seek n destroy, Fade to black, For whom the bell tolls, Creeping death, Battery, Master of puppets, Sanitarium, Damage Inc, Harvester of sorrow, One, Blackened, Enter Sandman, Sad but true, The unforgiven, Nothing else matters
Best album : '...and Justice for all' in my opinion but many say 'Master of puppets' or 'Ride the lightning'.
Judgement : A band that needs no introduction, my names sake and in my opinion the best metal band ever. I could ramble on forever but I won't so lets just say if you don't appreciate Metallica then you're a damn fool!
Live rating : 10/10
Website Metallica

Name : Slayer
Genre : Thrash metal
Famous songs : The antichrist, Die by the sword, hell awaits, Angel of death, Raining blood, South of heaven, Mandatory suicide, Blood red, Dead skin mask, Postmortem, Seasons in the abyss, Alter of sacrifice, Bloodline, Dittohead, Stain of mind
Best album : Reign in blood
Judgement : Slayer defines the dark side of metal in every way, they couldn't be more influencial or important to the metal scene. Slayer have always stayed very true to their scene and have thrashed for 25 + years. All hail the mighty Slayer \m/!
Live rating : 10/10
Website : Slayer

Name : Megadeth
Genre : Thrash metal/hard rock
Famous songs : Mechanix, Peace sells, Devil's island, Wake up dead, In my darkest hour, Hook in mouth, Holy wars, Hangar 18, Take no prisoners, Tornado of souls, Polaris, Symphony of destruction, Sweating bullets, A tout le monde, Die dead enough, Kick the chair
Best album : Rust in peace
Judgement : Despite getting kicked out of Metallica, frontman of Megadeth Dave Mustaine managed to form a band that would become one of the 'big 4' thrash metal bands that came out of the 80's. What in my opinion was a slump in form during the 90's, Megadeth have made a great comeback with their more recent albums which mixes that awesome early 80's sound they had with a more modern hard rock feel. If you like Metallica and Anthrax then you're sure to love Megadeth.
Live rating : 10/10
Website : Megadeth

Name : Exodus
Genre : Thrash metal
Judgement : I've got two albums by Exodus, the debut album 'Bonded by blood' which is a thrash legend and one of their more recent albums 'Tempo of the damned'. Although I haven't heard the albums between, it seems to me Exodus have gone with the times well, their later stuff seemingly solid modern thrash with a real catchy edge. Definately worth a spin.
Website : Exodus

Name : Testament
Genre : Thrash metal/Heavy metal
Best album : The gathering
Judgement : Having heard a handful of Testament I can't pass full judgement but it's pretty widely known that 'The gathering' owns. Probably the 5th biggest thrash metal band of the 80's Tesetment's place on the metal map is well deserved and I can't wait to get round to hearing their whole back catalogue.
Website : Testament

Name : Sadus
Genre : Thrash metal

Judgement : Saw them live and heard a few songs but not enough to make a proper judgement. What I've heard sounds pretty awesome.

Name : Dark angel
Genre : Thrash metal
Judgement : I have the 'Time does not heal' album, it's very progressive and very core thrash. You hafta really love thrash to like this material but to get you started check our the song 'Sensory Deprivation' damn sick riffs.

MODERN CALIFORNIAN METAL AND OTHER CALIFORNATION METAL

Name : Machine head
Genre : Groove/Nu/Thrash/Metalcore
Famous songs : Davidian, Old, Thousand lies, Death church, Block, Ten ton hammer, Take my scars, Bay of pigs, Bulldozer, The blood the sweat the tears, Trephination, American High, Crashing around you, Imperium, Left unfinished, Days turn blue to grey, Descend the shades of night, Clenching the fists of dissent, Beautiful mourning, Aesthetics of hate, Halo, Slanderous, Deafening silence, The burning red
Best album : The Blackening
Judgement : I'm a massive Machine head fan. Starting in the early 90's, Machine head took an element of the 80's bay area thrash and made it their own by putting in a modern sound. Experimenting with downtuned guitars and nu metal, Machine head soon became a very popular metal band. Their latest album 'The blackening' I think is their best despite the fact I love the first two albums a lot as well. It's clear MH made a massive effort on their latest release and it's rare to see a band make their later stuff better than their early stuff but in my opinion MH have done it well. Rob Flynn and MH have a real metal spirit which I love and their live shows are amazing, last time I saw them they blew Wembley stadium apart.
Live rating : 10/10
Website : Machine Head

Name : Trivium
Genre : Thrash/Metalcore
Famous songs : If I Could Collapse the Masses, Requiem, Ember to inferno, Rain, Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr, Drowned and Torn Asunder, Ascendancy, A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation, Like light to flies, Dying in your arms, Ignition, Detonation, Entrance of the Conflagration, Becoming the Dragon, Contempt Breeds Contamination,
Best album : Ascendancy
Judgement : Trivium do what a lot of bands don't really attempt nowdays, bringing that Metallica/Megadeth classical element to their thrash but also being very modern with their approach. Trivium offer great solo's, catchy vocals and riffs. Their latest album I feel went slightly too catchy in places so I hope they go back to the gruffer vocals and musical structure of Ascendancy. Trivium probably the biggest newcomer to the metal scene and their popularity is truely amazing in such a short space of time.
Live rating : 9/10
Website : Trivium

Name : Avenged Sevenfold
Genre : Metalcore/heavy metal/rock
Famous songs : Turn the other way, Warmness on the soul, Unholy confessions, Chapter four, Remenissions, Eternal rest, Beast and the harlot, Burn it down, Bat country, Seize the day, Strength of the world
Best album : Waking the fallen
Judgement : I'm a big fan of 'Waking the fallen' I thought it was a beautiful metalcore album that really stuck in the head. It's a shame that the singer broke his voice at the reading festival show (which I was at) and now can't do the growling vocals anymore. I think 'City of evil' was average really, songs went on too long and although Shadows has a truely awesome voice, his singing gets a bit too much after such a long album. Looking forward to their next album expected at the end of October.
Live rating : 7/10
Website : Avenged Sevenfold

Name : System of a down
Genre : Alternative metal/nu metal
Famous songs : Sugar, Spiders, Soil, War?, P.L.U.C.K, Prison song, Needles, Deer dance, Jet pilot, Chop Suey!, Forest, Science, Toxicity, Aerials, Boom!, Innervision, Highway song, Fuck the system, Mr. Jack, B.Y.O.B, Revenga, Cigaro, Radio/video, Violent pornography, Old school hollywood, Attack, Dreaming, Kill rock n roll, Hypnotize, Holy mountains, Lonely day
Best album : Toxicity
Judgement : System are a really awesome band, to become so popular and be so original is a massive achievement. Coming about during the nu metal scene, System really hit massive popularity with their second album 'Toxicity' and from there the rest is history. Although on hiatus at the moment, System were constantly headlining major metal/rock festivals around the world.
Live rating : 10/10
Website : System of a down

Name : Black label society
Genre : Heavy metal/Hard rock
Famous songs : Bored to tears, Born to loose, Counterfeit god, All for you, Like a bird, Bleed for me, Stillborn, The blessed hellride, House of doom, Suicide messiah, Fire it up, In this river, Concrete jungle, Blood is thicker than water, Forver down, You must be blind, Doomsday jesus, Stoned and drunk
Best album : Mafia (in my opinion)
Judgement : I've heard 3 albums so my judgement on best album may be wrong but 'Mafia' rocks. Black label society being the band of the legendary Zakk Wylde, Ozzy Osbournes ex guitarist. Their sound is very old school but modern production makes the sound a whole lot heavier and metal as fuck. I really like Wylde's approach to song writing and song subject, his skills as a guitarist are shown off in every song with shreading solos and crunching riffs. Wylde for president \m/
Website : Black label society

Name : Korn
Genre : Alternative/Nu metal
Famous songs : Blind, Clown, Faget, Shoots and ladders, Twist, Chi, A.D.I.D.A.S, It's on!, Freak on a leash, Got the life, Dead bodies everywhere, Falling away from me, Make me bad, Somebody someone, Here to stay, Thoughtless, Right now, Did my time, Twisted transistor, Coming undone, Politics, Evolution, Hold on
Best album : Korn
Judgement : No teenager into metal could avoid getting into Korn and I was one of them. They had a real unique sound that made them massive in a short space of time. They have this dark twisted edge that a lot of people could relate to. I haven't listened to them in a while and after the 'untouchables' album I don't know any of their stuff because I grew out of it. I still respect their work and importance.
Live rating : 8/10
Website : Korn

Name : Tool
Genre : Alternative/progressive metal/rock
Famous songs : Prison sex, Sober, Swamp song, Stinkfist, Forty six + 2, Enema, The grudge, Schism, Parabol, Parabola, Ticks + leeches, Lateralus, vicarious, Jambi, The pot, 10,000 days
Best album : Lateralus
Judgement : I'm not always big on slow progressive bands but Tool are special, having gained massive popularity with their first two albums, Tool's albums have been few and far between which makes their releases much anticipated. Saying that, Tool don't dissapoint, it's clear to see a lot of effort goes into making their albums. I saw them at the Download festival a couple years ago and they blew me away which their presence. Not one of my top favourite bands but when you're in the mood, Tool hits the spot nicely.
Live rating : 8/10

Name : Deftones
Genre : Alternative/Nu metal/rock
Famous songs : Bored, Minus blindfold, Nosebleed, Root, 7 words, My own summer, Be quiet and drive, Mascara, Headup, Digital bath, Elite, Knife party, Passenger, Change, Back to school, Hexagram, Needles and pins, Minerva, Battle-axe, Hole in the earth, Rapture, Mein
Best ablum : White pony
Judgement : Again another very original band that's made it pretty big. Deftones first album 'Adrenaline' was their most rough and from their they devloped their strange style of Nu metal/rock. Essentially Deftones are a very laid back band and are good when you're in the right mood. I don't really listen to them much anymore but I find them very relaxing when the occasion is right.
Live rating : 7/10
Website : Deftones

Name : Fear Factory
Genre : Industrial/groove/death metal
Famous songs : Demanufacture, Zero Signal, Replica, New breed, Body hammer, Edgecrusher, Securitron, Smasher/Devourer, What will become?, Linchpin, Invisible wounds, slave labor, Cyberwaste, Archtype, Undercurrent, 540, 000° Fahrenheit, Transgression
Best album : Demanufacture
Judgement : Fear factory have made a recent return to form with their latest albums being much better than previous efforts. The second album 'Demanufacture' is a masterpiece and is a must listen for any metal fan. Really good band live, keep it up.
Live rating : 7/10
Website : Fear Factory

Name : Bleeding Through
Genre : Metalcore
Famous songs : Love lost in a hail of gun fire, Sweet Vampirous, Number seven with a bullet, On wings of lead, Revenge I seek, For love and failing, Love in slow motion, Kill to believe, Dearly demented, Line in the sand
Best album : This is love, this is murderous
Judgement : Focusing mainly on the feeling of love and emotion Bleeding through aren't one of my favourite bands but some of their songs are really brutal with thumping riffs and immense beatdowns. Really enjoyed seeing them live and I'm sure they'll continue to me a rising force in the metalcore scene.
Live rating : 7/10
Website : Bleeding Through

Name : Devildriver
Genre : Groove/thrash metal
Famous songs : Nothings wrong?, I could care less, Cry for me sky, What does it take, End of the line, Sin + Sacrifice, Driving down the darkness, Not all who wander are lost, These fighting words
Best album : Devildriver
Judgement : I really liked the debut album, it was original with some catchy choruses and riffs but I couldn't get into the next two so much. It just started to sound the same a lot, the rhythms got boring and there's no real melody going on. A lot of people like the newer stuff so I'd still recommend listening to them and they are good live.
Live rating : 6/10
Website : Devildriver

Name : Throwdown
Genre : Metalcore/post thrash/hardcore
Judgement : I've only heard the 'Haymaker' album properly and I really love it, it sounds a lot like Hatebreed, really brutal with beatdowns all over the place. I don't agree with their early 'straight edge' image but it seems now they are bringing in a heavy metal influence rather than hardcore. Heard their latest album a couple times, not too sure if I like it but it sounds a bit panterish so who knows what's next for this band.
Live rating : 7/10
Website : Throwdown

Name : As I lay dying
Genre : Metalcore
Judgement : I like a couple of their songs and they have some good riffs but I don't dig the vocals in places. If you like stuff like Bleeding through and Caliban then perhaps you'll like As I lay dying but personally I cant get into them. Plus they're christian.
Live rating : 4/10

NEW YORK/NEW JERESY METAL

Coloured deep blue on the map.

Name : Anthrax
Genre : Thrash metal/hard rock
Famous songs : Metal thrashing mad, I'm eighteen, A.I.R, Madhouse, The enemy, Armed and dangerous, Among the living, Caught in a mosh, I am the law, NFL, Indians, Antisocial, Keep it in the family, Belly of the beast, Safe home
Best album : Among the living
Judgement : Anthrax has always been a core band for the spirit of metal, always have a good time watching them live. They dont seem to take themselves too seriously and like to have fun which is what thrash metal is all about. Their old stuff probably better than there later (but that's true with most bands) but their riff progressions and catchy choruses are second to none.
Live rating : 10/10
Website : Anthrax

Name : Stormtroopers of death

Famous songs : Kill yourself, Speak english or die, United forces, Pussy whipped, Bigger than the devil, Crackhead song, Kill the assholes, Song that don't go fast, Make room make room, Free dirty needles, We all bleed red, Aren't you hungry
Best album : Bigger than the devil
Judgement : Hardcore project from members of Anthrax, most songs are quick and catchy. If you like thrash metal then get hold of some SOD, a lot of fun with a few laughs along the way. Not a band to be taken too seriously but yeah great stuff.

Name : Nuclear Assault
Genre : Thrash metal
Judgement : A fairly big player in the thrash scene but I haven't really found anything that special about them, they do have a lot of material though so I dunno.

Best album : Systematic Chaos
Judgement : I only really like the last 4 Dream threater albums, their earlier days was more rock than metal so I dont really like it much. I think their latest release is the best to date. Dream theater are one of the most talented bands on earth, every single member is pro at their instrument. This makes for an excellent metal band and Dream theater are just that. If you like decent riff progression and amazing solos combined with a mellow rock exterior then look no further.

Judgement : Manowar are the kings of metal, whenever metal is threatened, Manowar is there with a mighty axe to chomp the enemy! But seriously Manowar make some awesome heavy metal, I haven't heard the whole catalogue but I'm sure I will. If you wanna know what metal is all about then stick on some Manowar because they've been going 25+ years and couldn't be a bigger flag for everything metal is about. Get ready to blow your speakers!

Judgement : Bloodsimple aren't particulary from New york as they are formed from ex members of other bands but some of the members originate from there. Best album : Symbolic
Judgement : Death are one of my favourite bands, no band sounds like Death, especially late Death. I cry that Chuck died and they aren't about anymore because their metal was revolutionary. If you wanna hear one of the finest metal albums ever made then get 'Symbolic'. I can't recommend this band enough.

Name : Morbid angel

Famous songs : Immortal rights, Maze of torment, Chapel of ghouls, Fall from grace, Blessed are the sick, Abominations, Rapture, Pain divide, Angel of disease, God of emptiness, Dominate, Where the slime live, Dawn of the angry
Best album : Alters of madness
Judgement : Still giving some of their albums more listens as I haven't heard much of the newer stuff. Saw them live when I didn't know too much of their material and they blew me away which is difficult to do. Morbid angel are one of the original death metal bands and Azagthoths guitar work is original and suberp. A must for extreme metal fans.

Best album : Once upon a cross
Judgement : Extremely anti christian band and from the dvd, very scary guys lol. They are metal as fuck and if you like pure death metal then Deicide may just be one of your favourite bands. I don't listen to them a lot but when you're in the mood nothing beats them.

Best album : Frozen in time (although some may argue the older albums)
Judgement : Obituary have a really unique sound, it's very much like their choice of music and lyrics, down and dirty. They have some punk roots which show sometimes but their overall ambience is very dark and death metal. Last of the 'big 4' death metal bands I've mentioned to emerge from Florida in the late 80's and the start of the death scene in America.

Best album : Something wicked this way comes
Judgement : I'm a big fan of Iced earth, their music is well thought out and technically sound. I really enjoy the albums with 'Matt Barlow' on vocals and not entirely keen on the new singer 'Tim Owens' but still, Iced earth owns. After checking out 'Something wicked this way comes' definately get hold of 'The horror show' and 'Iced Earth' as they're classic albums too. MASSACHUSETTS METAL

Famous songs : Temple from within, vide infra, Soilborn, Numbered days, Self revolution, Fixation on the darkness, My last serenade, Life to lifeless, Just barely breathing, To the sons of man, Rise inside, A bid farewell, Take this oath, When darkness falls, Rose of Sharyn, Breathe life, The end of heartache, World ablaze, Daylight dies, This is absolution, The arms of sorrow, My curse
Best album : Alive or just breathing
Judgement : People will have mixed judgement on this band but I think 'Alive or just breathing' was one of freshest and most original albums I had ever heard when it came out and still sticks in my head as a masterpiece. Releases since have been average at best in my opinion, they've gone a bit scene. Killswitch stand as one of the pioneers of metalcore and modern metal and will continue to dominate with a fan base growing all the time.

Best album : The oncoming storm
Judgement : Unearth are one of my favourite metalcore bands, I see them being a big part of the future of metal. Fast riffing mixed with crunching breakdowns and ravenous vocals. Unearth really are a gaurantee for carnage and mayhem.

Best album : The art of balance
Judgement : I really like the first two albums, I think they are full of passion and every song offers something. I went off Shadows fall after listening to their third album and the follow up 'Fallout from the war' which was B-sides and stuff from the third album 'The war within' which I think was just milking money from what was a weak album in my opinion. Their latest CD 'Threads of life' is an improvement so hopefully a positive future.

Name : All that remains
Genre : Metalcore
Famous songs : And death in my arms, The deepest grey, Vicious betrayal, Focus shall not fail, This darkened heart, For salvation, This calling, Not alone, Whispers, The weak willed, Six, It dwells on me
Best album : This darkened heart
Judgement : 'This darkened heart' in my opinion is a modern metal masterpiece, every song catches you in a different way. Catchy but different is what I look for, using different song writing techniques to achieve the same goal and that's what All that remains do well. I think their follow up album was good but not great, the songs were too short and I didn't think it worked as well but they still remain a big band for the future. I am not the weak willed grrr!

Best album : Hillbilly deluxe
Judgement : Can't say I listen to zombie often but his music is well produced and goes down really well at an alternative club. Fans of dance music should check out some Rob Zombie as well as metal fans, it's just really cool music. He also does film directing, mainly horror of course!

LOUSIANA METAL

Coloured dark green on the map

Name : Crowbar
Genre : Doom/sludge metal
Judgement : I had one of their albums but I lent it to a friend and haven't get it back yet! I'm not a big fan of consistantly slow music but Crowbar are pretty good. Saw them live and it was damn heavy so if you're into that sludge scene then make sure Crowbar is the next thing you buy (if you haven't already).

Name : Acid bath
Genre : Doom/sludge/grunge metal
Famous songs : The blue, Tranquilized, Cheap vodka, Scream of the butterfly, Dope fiend, The bones of baby dolls, Paegan love song, Bleed me an ocean, New death sensation,
Best album : When the kite string pops
Judgement : This is one fucked up band, with only two albums before their break up Acid bath have some what of a cult following. I find some of their songs absolutely amazing and others make me feel uneasy. Any music lover should get hold of 'scream of the butterfly' because it's simply beautiful. I can't really describe this band because they are mix of so many things. Find out for yourself.
Website : Acid Bath

Name : Exhorder
Genre : Thrash/groove metal
Judgement : Exhorder had two albums back in the early 90's which were said to be the roots of 'groove' oriented metal which made bands like 'Pantera' and 'Machine head' so big. I've heard their albums and they're certainly are worth a listen but I think it takes a while to grow on you because it's pretty raw production. It's always good to know and understand the roots of the music you love.

Name : Superjoint ritual
Genre : Thrash/punk/slude metal
Famous songs : Oblivious Maximus, It takes no guts, Everyone hates everyone, The alcholik, Fuck your enemy, Drug your love, Sickness, waiting for the turning point, Dress like a target, The destruction of a person, Personal insult, symbol of nevemore
Best album : A lethal dose of american hatred
Judgement : I really love Phil Anselmo so naturally I think everything he touches turns to gold. Superjoint ritual is a drug fueld metal band with punk influences and are catchy as hell. If you like Pantera then you'll probably enjoy Superjoint ritual.
Website : Superjoint Ritual

Name : Down
Genre : Heavy/doom metal
Famous songs : Lifer, Hail the leaf, Stone the crow, Bury me in smoke, Ghosts along the Mississippi, Beautifully depressed, New orleans is a dying whore
Best album : Nola
Judgement : Although i've listened to their material quite a lot, some of it catches me and some of it doesn't. The songs I like are musical brilliance and there's no limit on who can listen to Down, some of their songs are just southern rock and very relaxed. Saw them live at Download a couple years ago and Phil Anselmo was funny as fuck. New album out recently I just gotta get round to hearing. Best album : Primitive
Judgement : I've always liked Soulfly from back when I was into nu metal as a kid, they were one of the heavier bands and I guess helped me get into heavier music. Max is a thrash legend, nicknamed the 'Marley of metal' bringing different people and influences on his albums to keep them fresh but undoubtidly heavy. If you're looking to get into heavier music then Soulfly is a good start.

Judgement : Just started listening to this band, the riffs seem awesome but I'm a fan of solid song structure and JFAC seems a little all over the place, however I endevour to listen further because it's normally the bands that are hard to get into at first that turn out being the best.

WEST VIRGINIAN METAL

Coloured pale light green on the map.

Name : Darkness remains
Genre : Progressive/technical death metal
Judgement : Only releasing two albums before splitting up, they are a very underground band and I kinda stumbled upon them one day so I doubt many would of heard of them. I strongly reccomend the album 'Lamia' but I doubt anyone will be able to get hold of it so maybe I'll upload it somewhere because it's awesome.

Name : Municipal waste
Genre : Thrash
Judgement : Heard a few songs from a friend and it's basically 'fun thrash' which means no-one takes it seriously and songs are normally very short, catchy and mainly pointless. Check out 'The art of partying' album, the funner side of metal. I love bands like this, reminds me of stormtroopers of death.

Name : The black dahlia murder
Genre : Melodic death metal/metalcore
Famous songs : Unhallowed, Funeral thirst, Elder misanthropy, Closed casket requiem, A vulgar picture
Judgement : I'm a big fan of the 'Unhallowed' and I'm listening to Miasma now but I hear they have a new album out that I'll have to get hold of. Too much metal, too little time! If you like stuff like In flames and Children of bodom then you might wanna go a step heavier and listen to this band. Brutal vocals and momumental breakdowns but beautifully melodic.

Name : Still remains
Genre : Metalcore
Judgement : Not too keen on the vocals and they sound like every other melodic metalcore band, however if you really like that kinda thing then check them out.

Famous songs : Stupify, Voices, The game, Down with the sickness, Prayer, Remember, Liberate, Guarded, Stricken, Just stop, Land of confusion, Ten thousand fists, Numb, Want
Best album : The sickness
Judgement : The sickness was one of my favourite albums when I was a teenager and still remains a classic in my eyes. Really catchy music with original vocals, sorta grew out of Disturbed a bit but they've left their mark on me. If you like lighter metal then you'll like Disturbed.
Website : Disturbed

Name : Impetigo

TEXAN METAL

Name : Pantera
Genre : Groove/Thrash metal
Famous songs : Cowboys from hell, Primal concrete sledge, Pyscho holiday, Cemetry gates, Domination, Mouth for war, Walk, Fucking hostile, This love, Rise, No good, Regular people, A new level, Hollow, Becoming, 5minutes alone, I'm broken, Hard line sunken cheeks, Slaughtered, War nerve, Drag the waters, Suicide note I + II, Floods, Goddamn electric, Yesterday dont mean shit, Revolution is my name,
Best album : Vulgar display of power
Judgement : If any band could define the metal attitude it's Pantera. Smoking, drinking, thrashing cowboys. There's a reason why Pantera are so popular, simply every song is great. In Phil Anselmo, Pantera had in my opinion the best metal vocalist. In Dimebag Darrel (RIP) one of the best technical metal guitarists. The band was a powerhouse supergroup of amazing musicianship. I love Pantera and I can't believe they will never be around again. Rest in peace Dimebag.
Website : Pantera

Name : Solitude Aeturnus
Genre : Doom/progressive metal
Judgement : I've heard the latest album 'alone' and it's seriously good but it's just too slow for me at this moment in time. I'm sure i'll love bands like this when I'm a bit older but I'd recommend it to anyone who likes progressive music. The Band's experienced and been going a long time.

OHIO METAL

Famous songs : Let go, Dead inside, Severed, SP lit, Cleansation, Power trip, Down again, Pure hatred, The dehumanizing process, Nothing remains, Save ourselves, Salvation, Comatose, Everything you love, Lazarus, Resurrection, Pleasure in pain, Empire
Best album : Chimaira
Judgement : Chimaira have explored many different areas of metal, starting off with a heavy nu metal sound and progressing to a melodic early metalcore sound they have recently gone heavier. Using elements of thrash and death to create a unique sounding modern metal ambience. Chimaira get more technical with every album and instead of selling out like most bands do nowdays they have complicated and hardened their sound and I respect them for it. Band for the future for sure.

WASHINGTON METAL

Name : Metal church
Genre : Heavy/thrash/power metal
Judgement : Metal church have been going a hell of a long time but I've heard very little. A band I know I'm gonna enjoy getting into at a later date. Some people like to listen to as much as they can of their music but I like to take my time and plod through bands so I can take everything in. You don't wanna find yourself with nothing to listen to! Anyway, if you like old thrash then I believe Metal church might just satisfy you.

Best album : Iowa
Judgement : Firstly I like Iowa the best because it's damn heavy. Ok Slipknot is one of the most original metal bands to date, say what you will they make good music. Their members that actually play instruments are very talented. Seen them live a few times, fucking amazing. I was at the gig filmed for the 'disasterpieces' dvd, infact it was the first concert I went to, I think
most metal fans have a spot for Slipknot. I look forward to their next album expected sometime next year.

COLORADO METAL

Genre : Technical death metal/grindcore
Judgement : I'm well into their latest album 'Xenosapien' and would recommend it to any extreme metal fan, I love technical death metal and Cephalic carnage don't fall short. Gonna try and get hold of their older material. 'Lucid interval' is good too.
Website : Cephalic Carnage

SOUTH CAROLINAN METAL

Name : Nile
Genre : Technical death metal
Judgement : I find Nile hard to get into, their structures are all over the place. They demand heavy listening and one day I'll find the time because they aren't one of the most popular death metal bands without a reason. Nile focus their songs on middle eastern mythology and incorporate Egyptian instruments into some of their songs. Don't be fooled, Nile are brutal as fuck.

NORTH CAROLINAN METAL

Name : Sanctity
Genre : Metalcore/groove
Famous songs : Zeppo, Beneath the machine, Beloved killer
Judgement : A new band to the scene, Sanctity have one album out and it's not bad but not a classic in my opinion. If you're a fan of Bullet for my valentine, Trivium, Still remains etc then your bound to like Sanctity. Average metalcore band, worth a listen.

ALASKAN METAL

Famous songs : Turns to ashes, One more word, Eightminutesupsidedown, Slit wrist theory, Bury me where I fall, Circl the drain, At the end of August, The heart and the shape, Destroy the map, I'll go until my heart stops
Best album : Bitterness the star
Judgement : First album was great, heavy, unique and I thought they would go onto heavier stuff but no. 36 Crazyfists fell short on the second album and turned toward the scene adding more melodic vocals and less metal. I didn't even bother with the third album. Pretty much a post hardcore band now and I don't take kindly to post hardcore. If you wanna listen to a solid heavy nu metal album then get Bitterness the star and forget the rest. Maybe they were always post hardcore but fuck it the first album was good.

MINNESOTA METAL

OKLAHOMA METAL

Judgement : I have 'The darkest red' album and it's solid metalcore, they do their melodies well. I think they look like a bunch of emos but they make alright metal. I'll hafta hear their latest album because I got a bad feeling they could go down that 'scene' road. Lets hope not.

Best album : Dead heart, in a dead world
Judgement : I'm a big Nevermore fan, I can't recommend 'Dead heart, in a dead world' enough to any metal fan. I'm still getting into their latest release but I'm sure it's gonna kick ass. Guitairst 'Jeff Loomis' is fucking amazing, his solo's will blow your ears to pieces and I mean it. This band has everything and I can't believe they aren't bigger than they are. So if you haven't heard of them then make sure you do. So awesome.

Go see them live so you can tell metal kids in 20 years that you saw Lamb of god on their early tours like I did (as the palaces burn supporting Slayer, fuck yeah) brutal as fuck, heavy as fuck, technical as fuck, everything Lamb of god is about I agree with, burn the fucker down.

Best album : SYL
Judgement : Lead by the insane and legendary Devin Townsend, Strapping young lad really are in a genre of their own. You can't put a name on it really, it's just all metal mixed together. If you wanna hear original extreme metal then this is it. A band I'd really like to see live and I'm pissed because I could of seen them at a festival but I didn't know who they were back then. Now I'm so into them I got all their albums.

Best album : Advance and vanquish
Judgement : I really fell in love with the 'advance and vanquish' album, it's fucking brilliant. 3 inches of blood take
heavy influence from NWOBHM and make it modern. With double vocals and extremely talented twin ripping guitarists, 3 inches of blood are a major band for the future. I think they are heavily underrated and I wish them success. Really wanna see them live.

Name : Thine eyes bleed

Name : Cryptopsy
Genre : Technical death metal
Judgement : Found it hard to get into this band as I was put off my the vocals, too much pointless screaming. I'm gonna get round to going through all their material as I'm sure there's some i'll like. On the back burner for the moment.

Name : Kataklysm
Genre : Death metal
Judgement : I've heard the 'Shadows and dust' album and it's a good death metal album, I'd recommend this band to fans of deathcore and extreme metal. There's an awesome feel about this band. Gonna do my best to hear more.

GERMAN THRASH METAL

IPB Image

Heading back to Europe now and to Germany where many a great metal band has been born. Let's start in the 80's, while Slayer and Metallica were thrashing America, these bands were doing the same across Europe. Germany is coloured orange on the map.

Name : Sodom
Genre : Thrash metal
Famous songs : Agent orange, Nuclear winter, Bullet in the head, Hunting season, Outbreak of evil, Witching metal, Ausgebombt, Bombenhagel, Abuse, Tired and red, Unwanted youth, Gone to glory, Among the weirdcong, I am the war, Napalm in the morning, Minejumper, Genocide, M-16
Best album : M-16
Judgement : I haven't heard all their albums but 'M-16' is a metal classic and Slayer/Megadeth fans would do well to hear it. It's about the Vietnam war and it owns. Sodom are one of the 'big 3' thrash metal bands to emerge from Germany in the early 80's and continue to thrash nowdays. Maxium respect.
Website : Sodom

Name : Destruction
Genre : Thrash metal
Famous songs : Bestial invasion, Profanity, Mad butcher, Death trap, Cracked brain, Tormentor, Curse the gods, Sign of fear, Life without sense, Nailed to the cross, Thrash til death,
Judgement : Again a band with so many albums it's hard to get round to hearing them all. Similar in style to Sodom, Destruction are a key band to the rise of extreme metal in europe. Respected by all, especially me. I can't judge the best album but 'The antichrist' is a thrash triumph. Get into it.
Live rating : 8/10
Website : Destruction

Name : Kreator
Genre : Thrash metal
Famous songs : Tormentor, Total death, Terror zone, Flag of hate, Enemy of god, Impossible brutality, When the sun burns red, People of the lie, Renewal, After the attack, Extreme aggression, Endless pain, Betrayer, Pleasure to kill
Jugement : Again too many albums to hear them all but what i've heard is awesome. Check out 'coma of souls' and 'enemy of god' really good metal albums. If your not hooked on german thrash already then you will be now.
Live rating : 7/10

GERMAN POWER METAL

Name : Blind guardian
Genre : Power/speed metal
Famous songs : A past and future seceret, Bright eyes, Mirror mirror, And then there was silence, The bard's song, Fly
Judgement : I don't know anything from this band but when I was at the Wacken festival in Germany there were people wearing Blind guardian t shirts everywhere and they weren't even playing. Massive in the Germany and the power metal scene in general. Blind guardian are also known to colaborate with Iced Earth and produced the crossover band called 'demons and wizards' who are worth checking out. I feel I'll get heavily into power metal when I'm older. It's awesome.
Website : Blind Guardian

Name : Freedom call
Genre : power metal
Judgement : I have the 'Crystal empire' album which I decided to buy when I saw a song by them on a live dvd. It's one of the best power metal albums i've heard. Great band.
Website : Freedom Call

Name : Helloween
Genre : Power/extreme power metal
Judgement : The little material I've heard from this band sounded similar to Dragonforce but on the whole I'm guessing a great power metal band. Massive in the scene and in Germany of course.

Judgement : I've heard the 'Nuclear fire' album and it's top notch. A band I see myself liking in the future.

Name : Running wild
Genre : Power/heavy metal
Judgement : Everyone should download the song 'Under jolly roger' and kill themselves if they don't love it. Seriously
Running wild is one of the funnest bands in the metal scene. They are basically pirate metal, i've heard a couple of albums and they seriously rock. My friend who's seen them live says they dress up like pirates on stage and stuff. How sweet is that, I'll hafta go see them.

GERMAN DEATH METAL

Name : Necrophagist
Genre : Technical/progressive/brutal death metal
Famous songs : Foul Body Autopsy, To Breathe in a Casket, Mutilate the Stillborn, Intestinal Incubation, Culinary Hyperversity, Advanced Corpse Tumor, Stabwound, The stillborn one, Epitaph, Only Ash Remains, Seven, Symbiotic in Theory, Ignominious & Pale
Best album : Onset of putrefaction
Judgement : Don't ask me why I love this band so much, I think their lyrics are kinda twsited and I don't agree with them but it's not like you can hear the lyrics. When the vocals do come through it just sounds badass anyway. The reason I like this band so much is the guitar work, it's simply out of this fucking world. You'd be pushed to find any metal band with a better guitarist than frontman of Necrophagist, Muhammed Suiçmez. He is simply a musical genius. What makes Necrophagist great is the ability to go off on a tandum but still have brutal but recognisable and 'catchy' choruses. Once you listen to them enough, you'll understand. I lost a good job because I stayed at a venue late waiting for Necrophagist to come on, plus I was out of my face on vodka. Was well worth it.
Live rating : 8/10

Rituals of time, Bled dry, Vanish away, Final warning, That's why I dispise you, Now or never, Retain the scars
Best album : Inwards
Judgement : Again, I fucking love this band so much. Possibly the best modern death/thrash band in my opinion. They are up there with the likes of Lamb of god and The haunted but of course not as popular. They are a must for any extreme metal fan. 'Inwards' is absolute metal masterpiece. Amazing.

OTHER GERMAN METAL

Name : Rammstein
Genre : Industrial
Judgement : I've only really heard 'Mutter' and admittidly it's very good, original as hell and a well rounded metal album. I'd of liked to of seen them live because I heard they put on a good show. Not a band i'll be heavily into because I like English vocals and I prefer more technical stuff I guess but still I appreciate them.
Website : Rammstein

Name : Caliban
Genre : Metalcore
Famous songs : Forsaken horizon, Storm of rage, Vicious circle, Bad dream, Scream from the abyss, The beloved and the hatred, Goodbye, I've sold myself, Stand up, Certainly...corpses bleed cold, My little seceret, Diary of an addict, I rape myself, Song about killing, Burden to bleed, Nothing is forever, I will never let you down, Let go, Another cold day,
Best album : Opposite from within
Judgement : Caliban were one of the originators of mixing melodic vocals with breakdowns, one of the biggest metalcore bands to come out of europe, Caliban enjoy global success. 'Opposite from within' is one of the best and most complete albums I've heard in the sense that every song is different and great. Fans of modern metal and metalcore should be sure to get hold of some Caliban.
Live rating : 9/10

SWEDISH METAL

Lets move north to one of the best places for metal in Europe, Sweden. Sweden is coloured light blue on the map.

Name : In flames
Genre : Melodic death metal
Famous songs : Behind space, Lunar strain, In flames, Moonshield, Artifacts of the Black Rain, The jester race, Jotun, Food for the gods, Dialogue with the Stars, Morphing into Primal, Episode 666, Embody the Invisible, Coerced Coexistence, Scorn, Zombie inc, Ordinary story, Bullet ride, Pinball map, Only for the weak, Square nothing, Clayman, Swim, Man made god, Reroute to remain, System, Trigger, Cloud connected, The quiet place, My sweet shadow, Take this life, Reflect the storm
Best album : Clayman
Judgement : In flames are pioneers of their genre, bringing that fantastic melodic sound but also crossing it with death/thrash to spark a new type of metal. I don't really like their latest stuff but they're still a massive band with hopefully more to give. 'Whoracle' and 'clayman' are metal genius and always will be. Long live In flames!
Live rating : 9/10

Website : In Flames

Name : Amon amarth
Genre : Melodic death/black/thrash metal
Famous songs : Ride for vengence, Without fear, Victorious march, The last with pagan blood, Avenger, Bastards of a lying breed, Masters of war, Risen from the sea, A fury divine, Annihilation of Hammerfest, Death in fire, Verus the world, Thousand years of oppresion, For the stabwounds in our backs, ...And Soon the World Will Cease to Be, An Ancient Sign of Coming Storm, The fate of norns, The pursuit of vikings, Valhalla awaits me, Runes to my memory, Hermod's Ride to Hel: Loke's Treachery Pt 1, With oden on our side, Cry of the black birds
Best album : Verus the world
Judgement : My favourite Swedish band are Amon amarth, no band paints a picture better than this band. The atmoshpere they can create with music is amazing. Most of Amon amarth's songs are about vikings and you can't get much more metal than that. All their albums are great and I'm sure people have different favourites, mine is 'Verus the world' but it's nearly a tie with their latest album 'With oden on our side' which is amazing also. I couldn't big up this band more, get into them.
Live rating : 10/10

Name : Arch enemy
Genre : Melodic death metal
Famous songs : Bury me an angel, Fields of desolation, Beast of man, Dark of the sun, Black earth, The immortal, Dead inside, Pilgrim, Silverwing, Demonic science, Enemy within, Heart of darkness, Ravenous, Dead bury their dead, The first deadly sin, Silent wars, We will rise, Dead eyes see no future, Exsist to exit, Carry the cross, Skeleton dance
Best album : Burning bridges
Judgement : I only really like old Arch enemy, I think 'burning bridges' is a great album and 'wages of sin' was great then it went a bit soft and less intense and I think they lost sight a bit. It's not bad metal but it's far from their best and it's a shame. Biggest dissapointment is the fact that i've seen them live like I dunno 5 times and they never play anything before wages of sin which is crap. Arch enemy are a big band in the metal scene and have a lot of fans so I wouldn't not recommend them and people looking to get into metal should take note and listen to some Arch enemy.
Live rating : 7/10

Name : The haunted
Genre : Melodic death/thrash/groove metal
Famous songs : Hate song, Chasm, In vein, Undead, Three times, Blood rust, Bury your dead, Trespass, Leech, Hollow ground, The world burns, Under the surface, Godpuppet, Shadow world, DOA, Downward spiral, Shithead, Bloodletting, No compromise, 99, Abysmal, All against all, My shadow, The flood, The medication
Best album : The haunted made me do it
Judgement : The haunted are a great band and fantastic live. I think their latest album is such a shame on their previous material, with melodic voclas and slowing stuff down, it just isn't the haunted. First three albums are masterpieces and the 4th 'Revolver' a good album also but 'The dead eye' makes me sick. I'll try not to be negative because their previous albums are worthy a high recommendation. Fast, thrashy and to the point. Great riffs and vocals, lets hope for a return to form soon.
Live rating : 10/10
Website : The Haunted

Name : At the gates
Genre : Melodic death metal
Judgement : At the gates were a revoluntionary band in the sense that they first started to mix melody with heavier parts. Metalcore shot off from the blueprints bands like this left. Anders Bjorler and his brother Jonas went on from At the gates to form the haunted. I've heard some of their material and it's interested me to listen further. A solid band that people should recognise as they laid a lot of roots for modern metal.
Website : At the gates

Name : Soilwork
Genre : Melodic death metal
Judgement : I've heard a couple of Soilwork albums and I like them, one being old and one being new. I think they've lost their raw edge for a more commercial sound but both are well done so I don't mind. Full of passion and punchy melodies, Soilwork are a band to be checked out by fans of the genre.
Website : Soilwork

Name : Unleashed
Genre : Death metal
Famous songs : Where no life dwells, Before the creation of time, Into glory ride, The immortals, Shadows in the deep,
Never ending hate, Bloodbath, To asgaard we fly, The one insane, Execute them all, Victims of war, In the name of god, Legal rapes, The defender, Hail the new age, Scream forth aggression, Death metal victory, Warmachine, In hellfire, Mediawhore, Hero of the land, Don't want to be born, Hell's unleashed, Joy in the sun, Triggerman, Winterland, The longships are coming, Only the dead, Destruction, Blood of lies, We must join with him, Midvinterblot, In victory or defeat, Valhalla awaits
Best album : Victory
Judgement : Unleashed play a really awesome catchy death metal, anyone looking to get into death metal should start here with unleashed. The vocals are similar to that of Amon amarth (probably because they both write about vikings) and you can tell the vocalist is a legend. The riffs keep you hooked and all round Unleashed are a great metal band. Very big in Sweden and Europe.
Website : Unleashed

Name : Dark Tranquility
Genre : Melodic death metal
Judgement : Everything I've heard from this band I like but I haven't got around to sitting down and inhaling one of their albums properly yet. Really good live when I've seen them and a massive band in their scene. If you like melodic death metal and haven't heard of Dark Tranquility then you're missing out, a band not to miss.
Live rating : 7/10
Website : Dark Tranquility

Name : Meshuggah
Genre : Experimental extreme death metal
Judgement : I've found it difficult to get into this band, their drummer uses amazing techniques to make the music so original. It's sort of a brutal stop start rhythm and crazy song structures. It's great when a band creates their own kind of metal but it's gonna take me some time I feel to 'get' this band, I like a few of their songs a lot but their style is so dissonant it's hard to be a big fan. This is just my opinion and Meshuggah is a massive metal band so you might have a different opinion so check them out, it's mind battering and heavy as hell.
Website : Meshuggah

Name : Grave
Genre : Death metal
Judgement : Just got hold of a couple of their albums and they sound similar to Morbid angel, churning riffs and dark vocals. Something tells me this band is gonna grow on me. Grade A death metal, can't say much more than that.
Website : Grave

Name : Dark funeral
Genre : Black metal
Judgement : I'm not huge on black metal, mainly because of the vocals and the tendancy for it to be badly prodcued. The dark funeral I have heard breaks this mold, yes the vocals still brutal but I dont mind as it's done well. I like the fact that it's well produced, the black metal sound is awesome and I don't see why many black metal bands downgrade it to sound like a blur of noise. I suggest the 'Diabolis Interium' for anyone who wants to get into black metal and Dark funeral.

Name : Bathory
Genre : Black/Death/thrash metal/Viking
Judgement : Bathory are one of the founding fathers of extreme metal. Extremely influencial in the birth of folk/viking and black metal Bathory go down as one of the metal greats. Saying this I haven't heard that much of their stuff which is something I'm gonna turn round. The stuff I have heard has been epic and powerful. Bathory are sadly no longer around as founding member and metal legend Quorthon died of heart failure in 2004. A major player in extreme metal and should be respected by all.
Website : Bathory

Name : Hypocrisy
Genre : Death/melodic death metal
Judgement : I've only heard their two latest albums and I think they're definately a band I'm gonna be listening to more often. Great drumming, voclas, melodies, Hypocrisy have it all. I like their alien themed style, great to hear unique themes coming from bands as the usual topics get a bit dry and old. Hypocrisy is win.
Website : Hypocrisy

Name : Hammerfall
Genre : Power metal
Judgement : I've heard the 'Chapter 5' album and it's really inspiring power metal, i've been meaning to get it since hearing it but never got round to it. Hammerfall are one of Sweden's premier power metal bands and have been making albums for 10 years and continue to blast earholes and shake the ground wherever they go. Mighty power metal!

Name : Opeth
Genre : Progressive/melodic death metal
Judgement : A massive band that I just can't get into, Opeth are huge in the metal scene and without a doubt are super talented. Perhaps a band I'll enjoy more when I'm older. FINNISH METAL

Sticking to the Fenno-Scandinavia region we move to Finland, another hot place for good metal. Finland is coloured deep purple on the map.

Name : Children of bodom
Genre : Melodic death/power/thrash metal
Famous songs : Deadnight warrior, In the shadows, Touch like the angel of death, Red light in my eyes pt 1+2, Warheart, Silent night, bodom night, Hatebreeder, Black widow, Children of bodom, Downfall, Follow the reaper, Bodom after midnight, Everytime I die, Mask of sanity, Hate me!, Needled 24/7, Sixpounder, Chokehold, Angels don't kill, Bodom beach terror, Hatecrew deathtroll, Living dead beat, Are you dead yet?, In you want peace...prepare for war, In your face, Trashed lost + strungout
Best album : I'm really undecided so I'm just gonna go with 'Hatebreeder'
Judgement : Bodom do a great job of mixing keyboards into their music without making it sound too cheesy, I'm not normally a huge fan of keyboards but Bodom wouldn't be the same without them. Fast, thrashy powerful guitars and original screamy vocals, Bodom have continued to produce great metal albums with this great formula. Children of bodom are probably Finlands premier metal band. Great stuff.

NORWEIGAN METAL

IPB Image

Norway is the home of black metal, can't blame people who live in a country so cold to have dark minds. I'd love to visit Norway. Norway is coloured pinky/purple on the map.

Name : Immortal
Genre : Black/thrash metal
Famous songs : The call of the wintermoon, Battles of the north, Blashyrkh, Withstand the Fall of Time, Tragedies Blows at Horizon, Where Dark and Light Don't Differ, At the Heart of Winter, Solarfall, Triumph, Against the Tide, My Dimension, Wrath from Above, Damned in Black, The Darkness That Embrace Me, One by One, Sons of Northern Darkness, Within the Dark Mind, In My Kingdom Cold, Antarctica, Beyond the North Waves, Tyrants
Best album : Sons of northern darkness
Judgement : I'm not keen on early Immortal as it's face melting black metal. I appreciate black metal but I find it the hardest to listen to and enjoy. The latest 3 Immortal albums I love, they're all masterpieces. There's not many bands as immaculate at their instruments as immortal. As a guitarist I understand how difficult some techniques can be and what Immortal achieve is astounding. The drumming is out of this world as well. The best thing about Immortal is the astmosphere they create. You can literally feel your room getting colder when you put them on. Amazing band and nothing pleases me more to know they are back
together and working on a new album. It's gonna rip new holes.
Website : Immortal

Name : Mayhem
Genre : Black metal
Judgement : A major player in the black metal scene, Mayhem are one of the originals. Can't say I know much of their material but I enjoyed them live despite not knowing any songs. That's a plus. Wanna get into black metal? try Mayhem.

Name : Darkthrone
Genre : Black metal
Judgement : I got an Immortal album out of interest, found one song really good but it's just too blurry for me to like it
properly. I'd like to hear more of their stuff as I know their first album is more death metal so I might enjoy it more and their later stuff might be different from what I've heard. Darkthrone are another originator of black metal and are to be respected thus. They rarely play live but I was lucky enough to catch them at the Wacken festival when I went.

Name : Burzum

Name : Carpathian forest
Genre : Black metal
Judgement : I have some true black metal friends that I don't see much anymore but back in the day they introduced me to all these black metal bands and this was one of them. Didn't really get into it but some of the songs were catchy, the whole scene is very elite. If you don't have long hair and dress like a black metaller then you're not a black metaller. I don't believe in that bullshit, I think if you like music then you like music, you shouldn't dress to that particulary. Anyway, Carpathian forest are a good black metal band to check out, one of the better ones I've heard.

It's like a less intense Immortal but still awesome extreme riffs and voclas, a sense of power metal shines through with the melodies. Every Immortal fan will love this. Get hold of 'Between two worlds' my album of the moment.

DANISH METAL

IPB Image

Denmark is coloured dark grey on the map, just above Germany.

Name : Mercyful fate
Genre : Black/heavy metal
Famous songs : A coprse without a soul, Evil, Curse of the pharaohs, Into the coven, Satan's fall, Gypsy, Burning the cross
Judgement : After hearing Metallica do the song 'Mecryful fate' on their covers album 'garage inc' which was a combination of 4 Mercryful fate songs mixed into one. I thought the songs was awesome so I got hold of some original Mercyful fate. It's good but a little too old school for me to love, it's clear Metallica have taken a lot of influence from this band.
Website : Mercyful Fate

Name : Hatesphere
Genre : Melodic death/thrash metal
Judgement : Didn't know who they were until I saw them supporting 'Kreator' and bought a CD by them that night because I was so impressed. Brilliant death/thrash metal, heard all their albums since and I'll admit not every song is a classic but certainly better than a lot of bands out there.
Live rating : 8/10

Name : Rhapsody
Genre : Symphonic power metal
Judgement : Got one of their albums and it's pretty good but I'm not too into the genre. Amazingly talented using loads of different instruments but the songs are normally about ancient lands and epic stories. It's fine I guess but I like more serious song subjects at this time in my life. Whatever floats you're boat I guess, if you like that sorta thing then Rhapsody lead the field. You might wanna check out Lucca Turelli's solo work too.

Name : Celtic frost
Genre : Black/death/thrash/gothic/doom metal
Judgement : Celtic frost explore pretty much all the metal genres. The only stuff I've heard by them was on Tv where I saw a live gig and I must say they were good, a bit slow in places but good enough for me to explore them further. A band to be respected as they've been going a hell of a long time. One of those metal greats you might not hear too often.

Any metal fan should definately get this album, best music to come out of France. You'll find yourself listening to this over and over again until you're sick of it. Just gets stuck in your head. Big band for the future, can't wait for the next album.

Anyone who's into death metal should check this band out right now, they've been going as well as the original american death metal bands and are just as good. Bringing slight elements of thrash into their sound they manage to remain fresh and increasingly interested with every album.

Best album : Back in black
Judgement : AC/DC don't really need an introduction, a band that helped heavy metal grow back in the 70's and very similar in style to the NWOBHM. A massive band that continues to this day. I'm not a huge fan or anything but I appreciate their music and what they did for rock.

In the early 90's they changed to a tribal groove sound with inspirations from their native land. The original band of Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera which still continues to make albums without him. A very inspirational band in the 80's Sepultura are now one of the biggest metal acts. I'm sure most metal fans would of already heard some Sepultura and if you haven't then I think you need to.

UPDATE 11/03/2009

Name : Into Eternity
Genre : Metalcore
Country : Canada
Judgement/comments : I can't believe how long it's been since I made this post and an update was definately needed because this band is fantastic. 'the Incurable tragedy' was in my top 5 albums of 2008, really sad, catchy, great vocals, riffs and melody. For fans of All that remains, Iron Maiden, Killswitch Engage.
Website : Into Eternity

Name : Arsis
Genre : Technical Death metal
Country : USA
Judgement/comments : My favourite album of 2008 was 'We are the nightmere' by Arsis. Absolutley fucking amazing stuff, technical death metal with shit loads of melody and ripping solos. I can't reccomend this band enough. Their previous album 'United in regret' is a solid effort as well. Just started listening to their very early stuff. Fuckin' Arsis ThumbUp.gif
Website : Arsis

Name : Dagoba
Genre : Metalcore
Country : France
Judgement/commets : A band that will grow on you if you like stuff like Killswitch engage/Unearth. Quite heavy on the melodic vocals but also kick drums, it's unusual at first but I love it. I've only heard their latest album 'Face the colossus' and it rips.
Website : Dagoba

Name : Agent Steel
Genre : Thrash
Country : USA - California
Judgement/comments : I bought 'Omega Conspiracy' and loved it but haven't got around to their other albums. Quite unknown for a band going since the 80's. Another old jem of the thrash era. Sounds a bit like Anthrax/death angel.

Name : Anterior
Genre : Metalcore

Name : Arghoslent
Genre : Death/Melodic Death metal
Country : USA
Judgement/comments : This band is pretty popular in the underground but don't seem to have any intentions of making it mainstream. Their stuff is hard to buy anywhere but fairly easy to download. It's probably because of their racist lyrics. I'm totally against their fascist views but honestly the one album I've heard by them 'hornets of pogrom' is one of the best albums I've ever heard musically.
Website : Arghoslent

Name : Bloodbath
Genre : Death metal

Website : Bloodbath

Name : Grand Magus
Genre : Power/heavy metal
Country : Sweden
Judgement/comments : Their latest album 'Iron Will' came out to mass rave reviews and it's easy to see why. All the songs are riddled with heavy metallica esque riffs with classic heavy metal vocals. Quite slow in places but the album keeps you entertained from beginning to end. Would reccomend to any rock music fan ThumbUp.gif

Wesbite : Exmortus

There's probably more bands I need to include and definately some that are already in the guide which I didn't write much about in the past but have recently got into and they need updating. Remember this guide is just about bands I come across and need to share with you guys and my comments are just one metalheads opinion. I know sometimes it can be hard to find new metal bands you like as a lot of good bands are kept underground. I hope this post helps you discover what you are looking for.

I'd like to link to this awesome website, it is the daddy of all things metal : Metal Archives

I can't tell you how happy I am to see someone outside of New Zealand Appreciate 8 Foot Sativa, I absolutely love them and would rate them 10/10 live tophath2wmcopy7gz.gif

Been waiting for this guide for a while, just to see what your personal taste is and also for some new bands. I agree with you on the metallica album ThumbUp.gif

About Opeth, I found it really hard to get into them too, heard about 7 songs from 4 different albums and it didn't make sense to me that they were so popular, then I heard the song 'Ghost Of Perdition' and it blew me away, one of my all time favourite songs and it really demonstrates their huge talent. I recommend you give it a listen if you havn't already, might help you get into them smile.gif

A band I love and didn't see on there is Into Eternity, Don't know if you've ever heard of them or anything by them, but I think they're an amazing band, they blend all sorts of genres into their songs. Death metal, Melodic death metal, Thrash metal, Power metal, and even acoustic guitars in some parts. Best way to describe them would be progressive metal. They even include female vocals in some songs which I love hearing in metal. Listen to Dead Or Dreaming, Spiralling Into Depression, Shallow, Isolation, Splintered Visions. I'm pretty sure you'd really like them, and could maybe add them to the guide after you give them a listen.
QUOTE
Fusing elements from across the spectrum of metal, including classic or melodic metal styling, thrashing riffs, power metal style clean vocals, high and low pitched harsh vocals drawn from death and black metal, and fast tempoed death metal drumming with blast beats, Into Eternity provide a sound that is professionally executed yet rather difficult to describe. The most common (and easiest) description of Into Eternity's music is progressive and death metal.
Took that from wikipedia, seems to give a pretty good idea of their sound. They've been around since '97 aswell, so they are in no way a new band.

It's a LIVE RATING, as in my impression after seeing them live. Not them as a band in all.

I have a lot of time on my hands until November when I start work, I felt I needed to do something for metal while I was still bumming around.

Scrolled thru it pretty fast and saw a few flaws. Some of the descriptions of the genres with some bands are a bit of here and there, like Bathory, no viking? Venom no black? hehe... and Sabaton is from Sweden and not Finland=)

Oh yeah.... Celtic Frost but no Hellhammer? Mercyful Fate but no King Diamond? Also bit sad not to see much by the great death metal bands that pioneered in sweden in the late 80s/early 90s. And Possessed needs some information!

Also, thought it would be more of history of the different genres and not just name dropping of different bands.

Anyway cool guide and nice to see you listed CANCER!

Mm nice guide but I think you should take out the ratings because that's only your taste in music and I and probably other people won't agree with them.

I dont really class Viking as a class of metal, it's just the lyrics, I can see what you mean and I wanted to include Viking but it doesn't really say much about the elements of music. I'll fix Venom must of been a slip.
I got my information about where bands are from using Wikipedia so I'll fix Sabaton too.

I'm not a big Celtic frost fan so I researched. I'll also add King Diamond. What Swedish death metal bands from the 80's ?

I was gonna include history and genre explanation but honestly I burnt out doing this, took forever so maybe I'll add something later.

Oh and Karl I'll add those Machine head songs just for you lol.

Marie, I'm not big on black metal so I guess I could get some advice. I'm much more of a thrasher.

Have you listened to 'Ghost of perdition' and checked out into eternity yet?

i REALLY dont know how you missed Into Eternity. they are amazing.

i dont really like how you seperated it into countries rather then their actual genres.
Dio is truely amazing.
dimmu borgir is DEFFINATELY one of my favorite bands, as is kalmah.
Firewind should be on there as well. they are reallllly good instrumentally.

may have already been on there and i scrolled past accidentally:
pantera
lamb of god
krokus
ozzy osbourne
sepultura
limp bizkit(yes limp bizkit. nu-metal)
cradle of filth
cannibal corpse
rush
jimi hendrix
chimaira
dethklok
guns n roses
Alexisonfire
LA Guns

and where are the 80's hair/glam metal bands?..... skid row, scorpions, motley crue, quiet riot, twisted sister, poison, van halen, def leppard, warrent, ratt, whitesnake, dokken

this is a little off topic, but every1 should check out "Metal: a headbangers journey" that will tell you of alot of good metal bands.

this should be added to the guide; metal "family tree" :
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b...l_Genealogy.jpg

should also add the history of the "metal horns"(hand gesture). what they mean, where its derived from, who first brought the sign into the metal world.
Watte Heck
nice ancient rites <3 i know the drummer of them irl lol

Hmm ok i dont agree at all with you there on Bathory. Hellhammer is pre-Celtic Frost but just as important.

Nihilist, Dismember, Grotesque, Carnage etc.

I'm not adding shitty 'glam' bands they aren't true metal in the slightest. They are popular rock. This is a guide that is meant to cover the main genres of proper metal - heavy/power,thrash,death,black and metalcore.

I'll check out into eternity and maybe firewind should be there.

pantera - in guide
lamb of god - in guide
krokus - hmm ok maybe
ozzy osbourne - yeah missed Ozzy, I'll add later
sepultura - in guide
limp bizkit(yes limp bizkit. nu-metal) - fuck off lol
cradle of filth - in guide
cannibal corpse - in guide
rush - Don't really class them as metal
jimi hendrix - NO
chimaira - in guide
dethklok - virutal metal, no thanks
guns n roses - was gonna include but they are more hard rock
Alexisonfire - post hardcore has no place in my guide, fuck off
LA Guns - nar glam is a sham.

Perhaps you should focus on what the guide does have rather than what it doesn't. I appreciate people suggesting bands but make sure they're metal before posting.

Ok ok I'll add viking lol, but it's like saying bands that write about the government should be 'polictical metal'
there's no actual musical intent by saying 'viking metal' is it not just melodic death/black with viking based themes. What makes 'viking' different in MUSICAL TERMS from melodic death?

Dismember is in there already and I'll look into the others, cheers.

how could you possibly call this the ultimate metal guide if you neglect bands and genres because you dislike them. glam and hair metal bands of the 80's are as important to metal as metallica and any other band.

Yeah ok go make a glam guide. Scropians and motley crue are as important to metal as slayer and metallica? Are you smoking crack or something?

The glam bands did it for the money, just like todays rap musicians.
se2b
thanks im gonna start getting back into metal...well some of it

jamespker101
What glam metal bands have strongly influenced any other metal bands other than glam metal bands themselves, and pantera. Glam metal is dead, all other genres that have been stated are still alive and creating brilliant music. If this guide was focused on the past it probably would have the glam metal bands, and bands like led zepplin and rush etc, but it's based on more current bands so there's no need for them to be included.
