@OP: You have a 4790K and a 4690K in those pcpartpicker lists. They both have clock multipliers unlocked. Is there a reason you're buying an unlocked CPU and not considering overclocking?

The stock intel HSF is adequate if not OCing, it can get quite loud though.

With that CPU I would splash out the extra 20quid for an aftermarket cooler though (if you want to OC or think you may want to in the future). Otherwise skip the cooler and get a locked CPU.

Also wtf is your budget? The first link has a total of $977 after rebates/sales but the second comes to $1740.

Comparing both speclists you provided

I will definitely pick the i5 because;

* I don't really need the extra HyperThreading from an i7 (only gives +3-6% improvement in gaming)
* The GTX970 Maxwell GPU is a better option

The rest is pretty identical. Well picked parts.

800 or even 500 gb ssd is a waste of money. Just getting a 250 gb ssd and then a (insert # here) Tb internal hd would give you the same performance with more space for cheaper as long as you put ur operating system on the ssd.

I agree with the sentiments about the i5. I will however recommend the K Series to overclock but look into an over clock friendly mobo (msi do the trick). Water cooling is based on the games you run/overclocking/case. Once you get those established then you worry about watercooling (I have it, it's nice)

As for gpu. If you're not planning on making the jump to 4k then you're probably better off just getting a 760 gtx, waiting for 4k to be the norm, then replacing. Otherwise you'll have spent a lot of money on something that's not so good in a year-ish. I don't know what your monitor situation is but if you're using old monitors I suggest keeping them and using above mentioned. If you're buying new one(s) then I suggest only getting one and dealing with it for now until the prices are more viable to upgrade.

I don't know what your case is like, I prefer a nice big case so I can manage wires properly and upgrade. I found looking for builds on yt helped me decide the case I wanted for my kit.
